Advisor Trip: Royal Palms, Phoenix, AZ

Looking for a quick getaway in Phoenix or a luxurious stopover on your way to Canyon Ranch Tucson? The Royal Palms Resort and Spa is a MUST STAY.

Royal Palms Entrance

This beautiful property was originally built in 1929 by Mr. Delos Willard Cooke (New York Industrialist) as a Spanish colonial inspired mansion for his ailing wife.  After being owned by several prominent owners, the estate eventually turned into the Royal Palms Resort and Spa, now a 5 Star boutique Virtuoso resort with full spa services.

Royal Palms Camel Back Villa

Royal Palms Camel Back Villa

Upon arrival, I felt I entered a time warp as I walked into this historic Arizona landmark featuring a fragrant orange grove, hidden alcoves, and colorful manicured gardens dotted by water fountains with the flavor of Andalusia. My room’s Juliet-style balcony window overlooked the hotel’s grand entrance. For those that want to relax or enjoy a romantic getaway, you will not go wrong with their spacious bathrooms (mine was just as big as the sleeping/living area) featuring a deep soaking tub and separate shower.

Royal Palms Montavista Terrace Room

Definitely try the award-winning restaurant, T. Cook’s, one of the best restaurants I have ever experienced.  I ordered the recommended duck foie gras and glad I indulged.

Royal Palms Spa Treatment

Visit in May, as I did, and enjoy hundreds of hummingbirds darting around the garden when dining al fresco for lunch or breakfast.  Did I mention breakfast is included with your stay when booking with Santa Barbara Travel?  Book with me and I will reward you with a $50 dinner credit at T. Cook’s and upgrade your room based on availability!

Advisor Trip: Costa Rica and New Dreams Las Mareas Resort

Costa Rica and adventure travel specialist, Tina Slimp, visited one of Costa Rica’s newest resorts, Dreams Las Mareas. She has been traveling to Costa Rica since the late 90’s and has traveled extensively throughout the country.

Costa Rica's Newest Resort, Dreams Las Mareas

Costa Rica’s Newest Resort, Dreams Las Mareas

Imagine zip-lining and/or rappelling waterfalls, snorkeling crystal clear water, and trekking across suspended bridges among the jungle’s tree tops one day, and then shooting the rapids the next.  Imagine no more as Costa Rica offers plenty of options when it comes to diversified adventure. Costa Rica is one my favorite destinations because of the country’s beauty, its people and the abundance of adventure activities.

Relax by the tropical pool area

Relax by the tropical pool area

Traveling to Costa Rica is easy with daily non-stop service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major US cities.  Host to American vacationers for years, almost everyone in Costa Rica speaks English and most businesses and hotels accept the US Dollar. I found Dreams Las Mareas a perfect vacation spot for clients that are interested in getting away and staying in a secluded resort with a beautiful expansive beach surrounded by lush green jungles. Not far from the Nicaragua border and located in popular Guanacaste on the Pacific Ocean, this all-inclusive beach property boasts all the amenities for an Unlimited Luxury® escape.

Rooms offer beach, jungle, or mountain views with hot tub on private terrace

You know you are miles away when you wake up to cute white faced-monkeys on your balcony, and can enjoy sunsets while soaking in your hot tub on your private terrace.  All of the resort rooms are spacious and offer beach, jungle or mountain views.  Dining is easy as you don’t need reservations and access is limitless to five restaurants, a grill, a buffet and a cafe. Don’t worry about bringing out your wallet as top-shelf spirits, natural juices and soft drinks are complimentary throughout the resort, including your in-suite mini-bar, and gratuities are included.  And if you have to stay connected, Las Mareas offers free WiFi and free phone calls to the US and within Costa Rica.

As you explore the center of town, enjoy personal exchanges with shop owners, meet the artists and potters at Casa Del Alfarero Santander, and listen to live, authentic Cuban music in a popular club. Drive into the cool mountains of Sierra de Escambray for a two-night stay at Hotel Los Helechos in Topes de Collantes National Park.

At Playa Giron visit the Bay of Pigs Museum, which offers the Cuban perspective of the historic events. This evening, discuss the importance of the Zapata Wetlands—a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the largest wetlands in the Caribbean—with the director of Zapata National Park. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Playa Larga.

February 14, 2017

The ecosystems of the Zapata Peninsula are home to more than 900 botanical species; 171 bird species; and 31 species of reptiles, including crocodiles. Early this morning join naturalists in a search for the endemic Cuban green woodpecker and the colorful Cuban parrot. Continue to the Korimakao Project, which nurtures the talents of some of Cuba’s finest musicians, dancers, and artists, and present a gift of art supplies to director Hilda Tamayo. At Boca de Guama learn about Cuban crocodile conservation efforts during a boat excursion on Treasure Lake, then drive to the Viñales Valley in Pinar Del Rio Province, stopping to visit a local tobacco farming family to witness the process of creating Cuba’s legendary cigars. Check in to Hotel Las Jazmines for the next two nights.

At lunch savor vegetables grown at an organic farm while meeting the family responsible for the land; afterwards, walk an easy trail to look for the endemic Cuban solitaire. In the small town of Viñale visit a private botanical garden, then browse a local bodega where residents shop with their ration books. This evening’s restaurant is located at the colorful Mural de la Prehistoria.

Domestic Fare Rule Change

From Santa Barbara Travel –

Last week United, American and Delta Airlines made fundamental changes to their fare rules that may have a significant impact on travelers and the cost of airline travel.  The rule change affects the combinability of fares when connecting through an intermediate city, open jaw itineraries, or multi-city trips.  The net effect of this rule change is to increase the price of tickets by restricting the  ability to break fares in connecting cities.  The easiest way to explain this change is the following:

Old system: A passenger is traveling between Los Angeles and New York City and connecting through Chicago.  Under the old system we could combine a LAX-Chicago fare with a Chicago-New York fare on the same ticket, which could result in a lower fare than the published LAX-New York fare.

New system: It is no longer possible to combine a LAX-Chicago fare with a Chicago-New York fare on the same ticket.

The consequences of this policy change are far from clear.  For many years it was a given that taking a connecting flight was frequently less expensive than traveling non-stop.  The reason for that was the combinability of lower fares through connecting cities.  Under these new rules that assumption may no longer apply.

The rule change affects all distribution channels – airline websites, online travel agencies, and travel agencies and travel management companies.  It will take skilled travel advisors to construct solutions to this new challenge.  Online agencies are going to feel the biggest impact of this change.

If you are booking through Concur or GetThere, or another online channel outside of Santa Barbara Travel, we recommend that you check with one of our travel advisors for a price comparison.

Below is United’s explanation of this rule change:Domestic Fare Rule Change1

If you are looking for a unique experience close to home, American Cruise Line, Tauck, or Pearl Sea Cruises offer wonderful choices. Cruise the Mississippi River via paddle boat, take in the Northwest via the Columbia & Snake Rivers, enjoy uncommon access in Alaska or the Galapagos, explore the majestic Great Lakes, or visit the 1,000 Islands Region of Canada. Or, travel abroad on a luxury cruise through Europe, Asia or South America. We can match your desires to the perfect trip.
